Why High Protein, Low Fat, Low Carbohydrate Diets Help You Lose Weight Fast

February 20th, 2008 · No Comments

A new study soon to be released in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism sheds some light on why some diets promote weight loss better than others.

There is only one known appetite stimulate hormone and it is called ghrelin.  Ghrelin levels increase shortly before meals and decrease promptly after ingestion of meals.

This study looked at what different nutrient ratio diets suppressed the appetite stimulation hormone ghrelin the longest.

What they found was that when fat was consumed ghrelin levels remained relatively high during and after the meal, which in turn could stimulate more hunger and lead to more food consumption.

When carbohydrates were consumed the ghrelin level dropped significantly after the meal, but returned shortly there after much higher than the normal baseline level.  This could explain why many when they eat primarily carbohydrates for a meal are satisfied at first, but then hungry again 30 minutes later.

I know this happens to me when I eat popcorn.  It tastes great and is filling at first, but about 30 minutes after eating it I am hungry if not hungrier than I was before I ate the popcorn.

The study found that protein provided the greatest suppression of ghrelin over a longer period of time.  This also explains why you tend to feel fuller for a longer period of time when you consume lean protein at your meals.

The next time you want to eat that all pasta meal think about how your body is going to react to it.  Instead cut down on the pasta and incorporate lean protein along with fibrous vegetables to not only lose weight fast, but be healthier.

You also get the benefit of the fat burning properties that protein and fiber provide which are all explained in the latest Get Rid of My Gut Program.  It is specifically designed to increase your fat burning potential and control your appetite stimulating ghrelin hormone levels.
